Welcome to the home page for the Padova-Tulane Exchange

Introduction

This is the second round of exchanges between Tulane University in the USA and the Università degli studi di Padova in Italy. Whereas last year the exchanges were carried out with language majors in Padova, this year Engineering students will be participating in the project. The aim of the project is threefold: to give students opportunities to speak in L2, to give students experience communicating with non-native speakers of their L1, and to improve students' intercultural competence regarding both their own culture and 'the other'. This takes place through the use of questionnaires, reflecting in class and oral discussions with peers in the exchange country using Skype. The contents of the discussions are non discipline-specific, but rather focus on different aspects of culture.

Week 1: Introductions on the wiki

It's not always easy to start talking on Skype with someone you've never met so the least we can do is introduce ourselves here on the wiki. Below you will see two sections "Padova Student Introductions" and "Tulane Student Introductions". Please write something about yourself in L2 (the language you are studying).

Week 2: Famiglia e passatempi

This week you've got your first Skype exchange. It tends to be easier to get the conversation going if you've already brainstormed ideas about what kinds of information you'd like to get from your peers. Our exchanges will be 50% in English, 50% in Italian. It's best if you have the chance to answer questions about your culture in your L1 and ask questions about he 'other' culture in L2. In this way you are able to truly express aspects about your own culture in your own language. In order to get ready, we would like to ask you to start brainstorming questions for this first week's topics below. Each group has a section her where students can write questions. You will be able to look at the questions during the Skype exchange and can provide answers to them after the conversation. There's also a section below called "Discussion". If anything comes up during the exchange that you didn't understand or would like to ask more about, post a question there and hopefully someone will answer. Vice versa, if you see questions for your 'culture', please answer them.

Week 3: L'ambiente e riciclagio

This week you've got your second Skype exchange. This week it should go a little more smoothly since we've already done it once. Hopefully there won't be any blackouts this time! This time we will try and stick to the 50% in English, 50% in Italian. The topic this week is the environment and recycling - quite a current topic given the situation in Naples! Since this topic may involve vocabulary you are not familiar with, I suggest you write some questions below. Last time only a few did it, but if each of you writes 2-3 questions below, then we've got almost 20 to pick from!

There's also a section below called "Discussion". If anything comes up during the exchange that you didn't understand or would like to ask more about, post a question there and hopefully someone will answer. Vice versa, if you see questions for your 'culture', please answer them.

1 - Please write a brief paragraph in your home page about the exchange this week - how you felt, what you learned, what worked, what didn't work, etc.

1- What types of films do you prefer? Americans use the word 'movies' more than 'films'.

2- Are there Italian movies in American cinemas? Americans may also say 'movie theater' rather than 'cinema'.

3- Which are the most important theatres in America? Given the comment above, one might wonder if you mean 'theater' as in drama or 'theater' as in movies.

4- Have you seen Italian fiction on TV? 'Fiction' isn't used this way in English. What you mean is 'tv program' or 'tv series'.

5- Is true that the american filmscome in Italy after 6 mounth? Is it true that American films take 6 months to get to Italy? (BTW, how would an American know this?)

6- Exist in American movie piracy? Are there problems with downloading movies / music in the States?

9- Are there italian programs on American TV? Italian

14- How many cinemas there are in a city like New Orleans?

15- Do you have a regional channel, that talk about only the things that happends in this territory? Do you have local tv channels that only talk about local issues and events?

16-What's your favorite program or sitcom or telefilm on TV? We don't say 'telefilm' in English. What exactly does it mean in Italian?!

You may also want to ask about the shootings in Illinois. What do you think about the shootings? Do they scare you? Why do you think there are problems with school shootings in the USA moreso than in other countries?

The Town	Has a population of 210,000. The main town in the province of the same name. In the Veneto region. Half an hour by train to Venice. Historical town.	La più grande città della Luisiana, lungo il fiume Mississippi e a sud del lago Pontchartrain. Patria del jazz e sede di un famoso Carnevale, è una delle città più visitate negli Stati Uniti. Prima di Katrina il censimento del 2000 riporta una popolazione di 484.684. Dopo Katrina la popolazione è scesa a 187.525 nell’ottobre 2006. Questa cifra è controversa. Sembra che oggi come oggi il 60% della popolazione sia tornata ad abitare nella citta'. In effetti molto poco e' stato fatto per ripristinare le zone piu colpite dall'uragano e moltissime sono le persone ancora senza tetto o in situazione di estremo disagio.
Campus	There is no campus. University buildings dispersed throughout the town. Students’ Internet access	Few students have broadband Internet access at home. Have access to Internet in the language labs and, obviously, during class. If necessary there are Internet Points.	C’è accesso all’internet sul campus, ma nell’insieme le attrezzature tecnologiche e la loro disponibilità sono state ridotte al minimo a causa dei danni subiti con Katrina. A due anni di distanza la situazione e' migliorata ma non ancora abbastanza da garantire un continuo funzionamento in rete.

Giornali e telegiornali affermano che l'Italia sta facendo brutta figura in tutto il mondo, per colpa del "problema rifiuti" di Napoli. Mi piacerebbe sapere se è una cosa nota anche lì, oppure se è solo propaganda politica. Ci tengo a precisare che questo, per fortuna, succede solo a Napoli e nelle zone vicine e non nel resto d'Italia. Fatemi sapere. Grazie, Mauro.

Io non ho sentito del problema rifiuti di Napoli. -Chris

Praticamente tutti noi sappiamo poco o niente di quello che succede a Napoli. Non ci sono articoli o notizie anche generiche sul problema dei rifiuti in Italia, sia nella stampa che alla televisione. Nell'altro mio corso di conversazione e composizione ho dato da leggere parecchi articoli presi dalla Repubblica e abbiamo studiato un po' piu' a fondo la situazione. Il tutto si presenta molto confuso riguardo alle vere cause, che rimangono incomprensibili e inspiegabili dal punto di vista degli studenti. Tutti comunque sono d'accordo: e' una vergogna. -latifah

Vi ringraziamo tutti per la vostra collaborazione durante i nostri incontri. Come avete potuto notare i ragazzi di Tulane si sentivano molto timidi per l'ultimo incontro con il video. Credo che essendo solo al secondo semestre di studio per l'italiano la loro timidezza sia comprensibile.

Abbiamo apprezzato molto la vostra pazienza e siamo contentissimi dell'opportunita' che ci avete dato. Siete tutti simpaticissimi!!
